Tesco launches first hot cross bun cafe

This new initiative by Tesco will open on the 5th of April for one week only in the build-up to Easter.

Customers will be able to enjoy a range of hot cross bun-filled dining experiences from the new cafe situated in Shoreditch.

The café will offer brunch to afternoon tea and even five-course fine dining, all from just £5 per head. Every dish and cocktail served will feature Tesco products with an innovative twist on the hot cross bun – including vegan ‘Hot Cross Bangers and Smash’ at brunch, Hot Cross Scones at afternoon tea, and Hot Cross Bun Espresso Martinis and Hot Cross Bun Steak Tartare at dinner.

Tesco also revealed that the café’s proceeds will go to their charity partner, the Trussell Trust.

“After two years of pared-back celebrations, we wanted to do something special to bring people together this Easter – both through the Tesco Hot Cross Bun Café experience and with this year’s products,” Tesco chief customer officer, Alessandra Bellini said.

Walkers launch its first non-HFSS crisps range with ‘half the salt’

Walkers is launching a new non-HFSS crisps range with “nearly half the salt” of its standard offering.

Simply called ‘45% Less Salt’, the range will debut with three flavours: Mild Cheese & Onion, Lightly Salted and A Dash of Salt & Vinegar.

All three flavours will launch this month in 6x25g multipacks (rsp: £1.75). Mild Cheese & Onion and Lightly Salted will also be available in 45g grab bags (rsp: 85p).

Walkers claimed the snacks had “performed strongly in consumer taste-testing”, with eight out of 10 consumers stating Mild Cheese and Onion “exceeded expectations”.

“We firmly believe this choice should never come at the expense of delicious flavour and with our new range, we’re on a mission to prove that less salt is unexpectedly tasty,” said Walkers senior marketing manager Rachael Smith.

Zizzi’s joins the at home offer

Zizzi’s has launched a new frozen range for consumers to enjoy at home with retailer Tesco.

The range consists of 10 Sku’s including a trio of 12” pizzas, five starters and two desserts. The brand is looking to roll out further products in May to increase the range to offer vegan including Vegan rainbow pasta and a chocolate brownie.

This is on the back of brands such as Leon and Pret offering their at home offers. The British Frozen Food Federation is reporting above-average growth in the sector with sales in value being up 14.4% and 11.5% up in volume. The frozen category is currently outperforming both fresh and chilled in value growth.
